Xiaomi 17 series That Shoots Like a Camera from €999

Forget the camera bump wars. Xiaomi just flipped the script entirely.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 have officially launched globally, and this isn’t your typical spec refresh. Xiaomi is going after professional photographers who’ve been reluctant to ditch their mirrorless cameras — and the specs make a surprisingly strong case.

Both phones run on Qualcomm’s brand-new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (a 3nm chipset that’s faster and more power-efficient than last year’s silicon), paired with Leica-branded camera systems under what Xiaomi now calls a “Strategic Co-creation Model” — meaning Leica isn’t just licensing its name here; it’s involved in the actual optics design.

The Ultra is where things get genuinely wild. Its main camera uses a 1-inch Light Fusion 1050L sensor — the kind of sensor size you’d normally find in a Sony point-and-shoot — co-developed with Leica. But the showstopper is the 200MP telephoto lens with continuous mechanical optical zoom between 75mm and 100mm, extendable to 400mm equivalent via sensor crop. That’s the kind of range that makes birders put down their binoculars. It also supports Dolby Vision and ACES Log (a professional color format used in cinema) video recording at up to 4K 120fps.

The 6.9-inch OLED display hits 3,500 nits peak brightness with a 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate (meaning it slows down to save battery when you’re reading, speeds up when you’re scrolling), and the 6,000mAh battery supports 100W wired charging — a full charge in well under an hour. At 8.29mm thin, it somehow packs all of this without feeling like a brick.

Xiaomi 17 Price

The standard Xiaomi 17 is the more surprising story. It’s actually thinner, lighter (191g vs. 218g), and carries a larger 6,330mAh battery — yet starts at €999 (~₹1,07,400). It’s 1/1.31-inch Light Fusion 950 sensor with a 60mm floating Leica telephoto lens can pull off 10cm macro shots, and the 50MP autofocus selfie camera is a legitimate upgrade for content creators.

Xiaomi also introduced the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi at €1,999 — essentially a Leica M-series camera cosplaying as a smartphone, for those who want the full red-dot experience.

Should you buy one? If you’re upgrading from a two-year-old flagship and camera quality is your primary concern, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is arguably the most technically ambitious Android phone available right now. The Ultra starts at €1,499 (~₹1,61,100). Both devices launch in India on February 11.

For most people, the standard Xiaomi 17 offers a remarkable balance of battery life, camera capability, and value — and at €999, it undercuts the Samsung Galaxy S26 and iPhone 17 while matching them nearly spec-for-spec on paper.

Prices mentioned are European launch pricing. India-specific pricing will be announced at the February 11 event.
